Mowgli: Legend Of The Jungle Has Screened, Here's What People Are Saying

Mowgli: Legend Of The Jungle Has Screened, Here's What People Are Saying

In the battle of Jungle Book movies, Disney's The Jungle Book made it to theaters first two years ago, racking up critical acclaim, a near $1 billion at the box office and an Oscar for visual effects. Now it's Andy Serkis' turn to show the world his vision of Rudyard Kipling's classic tale. Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle has now screened, so how does it stack up in the previous tellings, including Disney's, and what does it offer?

For CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg, Mowgli: Welcome to the Jungle stands out by being the much darker take that Andy Serkis promised, even if it doesn't completely work.

The darker tone is a big part of what separates Mowgli: Welcome to the Jungle from the successful Disney film, and is likely a pivot point on whether or not you will like what Andy Serkis has made. Scott Menzel really took to the film's darker tone and had high praise for the visuals and the story, actually liking it better than the successful Disney movie.

One pattern found in the reactions to the film is surprise, as some who've seen it liked it much better than they were expecting. For Anton Volkov, the film isn't perfect, but there were definitely things to like.

In a film like this, there is a lot of weight put on the performance of the actor playing Mowgli, as he has to carry the film to a large degree. A common thread in the reactions to Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is that Rohan Chand, who plays the titular character, does a good job, as Collider's Jeff Sneider says here, while also noting how the darker tone made it a tough theatrical sell.

While many seem to have enjoyed the different darker take that Andy Serkis' film offers to contrast the family-friendly Disney movie, some who saw the film found the darkness to be a bit too dark, as in pitch black. Kristy Puchko even compared it to a horror film.

Kristy was not alone in her assessment, as Will Mavity, who praised Mowgli's visuals, also emphasized how dark this movie is, indicating that it earned its PG-13 rating and is most definitely not for little kids.

One thing that is clear is that this film will not have the broad-appeal of Disney's The Jungle Book. But for those who are interested in a different take on the classic story, it seems that Andy Serkis delivers that and then some and parents will have to be very careful to not throw this movie on thinking they're going to be showing their kids singing bears.

These reactions make it clear why this film may be better suited to a Netflix release than a theatrical one, where it would have been very difficult to market. With Netflix being the primary place most people will see this film, perhaps more audiences will take the chance to do so and find that Disney's approach isn't the only way to tell a story.

Mowgli: Welcome to the Jungle starts streaming on Netflix on December 7. There's plenty still coming to Netflix in the last month of the year, so check it all out in our guide and head over to our 2019 release schedule to see all the biggest movies hitting the big screen next year.

Why Mark Hamill Doesn't Care About Returning To Star Wars Again

Why Mark Hamill Doesn't Care About Returning To Star Wars Again

Nobody is quite sure what Star Wars: Episode IX has in store, but if Mark Hamill is truly done with the franchise, it turns out, he's totally ok with that. The man who played Luke Skywalker admits that he just doesn't care if he returns to the galaxy far, far, away, because if he does, he'll do so without his friends from the franchise. Specifically, he says that losing Carrie Fisher has really damaged his ability to enjoy being part of Star Wars anymore. According to Hamill...

It really has tarnished my ability to enjoy it to its fullest. You were asking earlier, 'Are you gonna come back?' I don't care anymore, on that level. Because Han Solo is gone, Luke is gone. You just can't get the band back together the way you wanted it to be, and it shouldn't be that way. It is what it is. Rather than being sorry that we can't have more of her, I'm just grateful that we had the time with her that we did.

The entire new Star Wars trilogy has been about a new generation dealing with the responsibility of saving the galaxy that had once belonged to those that came before them. We knew that torches would be passed, unfortunately, real life got in the way and has forced torches to be passed much sooner than anybody was intending.

It's not too surprising to hear Mark Hamill tell ABC News that Star Wars is just less enjoyable for him now. He was clearly close with Carrie Fisher and the loss of her was all the more painful for her friends and family than it was for her fans. If part of the reason that you enjoyed making Star Wars movies was that you got to hang out with your old friends, then looking at a future appearance where you won't be able to have that is going to lose a lot of its luster.

At this point, it's anybody's guess whether or not Mark Hamill actually will return to Star Wars. The potential for Luke Skywalker to return in Episode IX as a Force Ghost is always there, and considering that's the only way any of the original Star Wars trio could return, the odds of it happening are probably pretty good. If Luke does appear as a Force Ghost it likely won't be a particularly large role, which is probably for the best for Mark Hamill if he's afraid it's just not going to be much fun anymore.

Even if Mark Hamill does return for Star Wars: Episode IX, that will likely be his last appearance in the franchise. While the end may be near, like the life of Carrie Fisher herself, fans will simply be grateful for the time they had with Luke Skywalker.

Justice League Dark May Feature Some Cool DC Hero Cameos

Justice League Dark May Feature Some Cool DC Hero Cameos

The Justice League Dark was among the many new additions to the DC Comics mythology in the New 52 reboot, and a couple years after the team's debut, Guillermo del Toro signed on to helm a Justice League Dark movie. In the years since, the movie has remained part of the ever-growing DC Extended Universe film slate, but it's also been passed to several other directors, and there's still no indication when it will actually become a reality. Nevertheless, Justice League Dark is still in development, and along with its lineup of starring protagonists, the script reportedly features cameos from several other DC heroes, who will collectively comprise the Shadowpact.

Apparently there's a scene in Justice League Dark where the main characters visit The Oblivion Bar, which is run by Eddie Deacon, located in a pocket dimension and only accessible to magic users. Among the many patrons at Oblivion are the Shadowpact, which in this movie is made up of Detective Chimp, Doctor Fate, Black Orchid, Pandora and The Phantom Stranger. But before any of you get too excited, That Hashtag Show's report made it clear that the Shadowpact is not expected to play a major role in the Justice League Dark story. They will simply be cameoing, and the Justice League Dark won't interact with them.

The Shadowpact made their DC Comics debut in 2005's Day of Vengeance #1, where they came together to battle The Spectre, a powerful mystical entity that seeks vengeance for innocents who've been wronged. The Shadowpact later starred in their own series of the same name and also appeared in the Reign in Hell miniseries. Many of the team's members (both in the comics and the one rumored to appear in Justice League Dark) have been part of the DC universe for decades, and since Justice League Dark is one of the few DCEU movies in the works where magic is central to the premise, having the Shadowpact briefly pop in is fitting. While it's far too soon to tell if Justice League Dark will launch a film series, if that happens, I could see some of the Shadowpact characters returning to play bigger roles, particularly Doctor Fate and Phantom Stranger.

No specific plot details for Justice League Dark have been revealed yet, and the team's roster hasn't been officially confirmed yet, though the main players that have been mentioned to appear over the years have included John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, Spectre and Madame Xanadu. Doug Liman was the last director attached to Justice League Dark, but he departed the movie due to not being impressed with the script. Jon Spaihts is now reportedly working on the story.

Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for updates concerning Justice League Dark's progress, and don't forget to look through our DC movies guide to learn what other movies this franchise has in development.
