Disney Brought Avengers: Endgame To Troops In The Middle East Thanks To Viral Tweet

While Avengers: Endgame is pretty much the box office king at this current time, and it feels like a lot of people have seen it at least once, we must remember that not everyone gets to see Joe and Anthony Russos comic book opus at the same time. This is especially true when it comes to those men and women who are deployed overseas, in the enduring effort of protecting the world and our nation. But for those who were lucky enough to attend, there were several screenings of Avengers: Endgame brought to troops in the Middle East, as a viral tweet from a military spouse sent the right message to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Kat Lancaster, wife to Air Force Major Joshua Lee Lancaster, was the person to spur this all on. Starting with a simple tweet, asking the Disney CEO if there was any chance of bringing Avengers: Endgame to the troops, this lead to Iger not only promising to check on the possibility of bringing the film to bases in Afghanistan and Al Udeid, but eventually delivering on said promise.

Bagram Air Base and Al Udeid Air Base were then allowed to host several showings of Avengers: Endgame for soldiers stationed in those areas. And it was all thanks to the efforts of a wife who missed her husband so much, she wanted to share a huge cultural moment with him and his colleagues.

Of course, in true Disney fashion, Stars and Stripes reported that the hard drive carrying the $1 billion+ grossing blockbuster to our men and women in the military was guarded in transit, and required an encryption key to activate. Once everything was set up though, the fun could begin, and in the case of Bagram Air Field, the film was actually shown eight times.

For those of you keeping score, thats basically a whole entire days worth of Avengers: Endgame screenings, clocking in at approximately 24 hours and 16 minutes. Which is comforting to know, as if the civilian population could find themselves offered such a convenience on our home soil, its nice to know that for one day out of their lives, military personnel could feel like they were back home again.

Sending a theatrical experience as fantastic as Avengers: Endgame to the troops in the Middle East is a real good guy move on the part of Bob Iger and The Walt Disney Company, and its something that even Captain America could fully support. And while these sorts of screenings do tend to happen from time to time, itll be nice to see if Disney is already in talks to make sure that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker gets that same treatment come Christmas time.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now, and we salute Kat Lancaster in her effort to bring some normalcy and entertainment to our men and women serving abroad.

Spoilers ahead for Deadpool 2.Since it arrived in theaters back in May, Deadpool 2 has continued to delight its captive audience. Wade Wilson's second solo film delighted just as much as the first, using a ton of surprising plot turns in the process. This began early in the film, when Morena Baccarin's Vanessa was killed off in the first act, changing the franchise as we knew it by taking away Deadpool's primary motivation. And while the film's post-credits scene essentially retconned it out of existence, Vanessa's death proved Deadpool 2 wasn't playing by the rules. Now Baccarin has shared an awesome behind the scenes video, showing her fatal bullet wound being painted on. Check it out.

Talk about a trigger warning. Vanessa's death is still very fresh, especially after the massive body count in Marvel's Avengers: infinity War. Characters are being killed off in superhero movies, although it's unclear if they'll stay that way. Just look at Vanessa.

Morena Baccarin's Twitter video shows the expert craftsman that goes into each and every bullet wound on set. In a franchise like Deadpool, where bullets are constantly flying, it can be easy for audiences to forget the work that goes into each effect. There are squibs, makeup, and plenty of bloody costumes that make each shot work within the film. While Vanessa wasn't a huge presence during Deadpool 2, her few short scenes required just as much attention to detail as the rest of David Leitch's blockbuster.

While she wasn't alive for much of Deadpool 2, Vanessa still helped move the story forward, giving Wade Wilson a reason to find a new family. That's what starts his forays in the X-Men and X-Force, and he eventually finds a tribe with Domino, Cable, and Firefist. Deadpool's grief also gave the film an emotional core to tug at, and explain why the title character was going through so many changes.

That's part of why Vanessa's resurrection was such a surprising choice. Using the macguffin of time control to keep Morena Baccarin in the franchise somewhat diminished the events of Deadpool 2, and made it clear that the franchise wasn't going to be strict with its canon. Now the possibilities are open for her role in Deadpool 3 and/or X-Force. Fans have been hoping Vanessa would eventually turn into the superheroic Copycat, but so far it's unclear if that'll ever happen.

Crazy Rich Asians Just Passed Another Significant Box Office Milestone

Crazy Rich Asians has had a solid run over the last couple of months in movie theaters, especially domestically. The film, about a young Asian American woman who visits her boyfriend's Singapore home just when their relationship is progressing, has already landed a sequel and has been a big box office success for Warner Bros. This week, it has also hit yet another box office milestone, becoming the highest grossing rom-com in nearly a decade.

While Crazy Rich Asians hasn't quite become the highest grossing rom-com of all time domestically, it has slowly but surely been climbing the ranks since its August 15 release. By Box Office Mojo's latest count, Crazy Rich Asians has surpassed The Proposal at the box office to become the sixth highest box office-grossing romantic comedy of all time. The other six movies that are still ahead of Crazy Rich Asians are even older: My Big Fat Greek Wedding, What Women Want, Hitch, Pretty Woman and There's Something About Mary. Of those, The Proposal is the most recent, but that flick still came out nearly a decade ago in 2009.

Previously, Crazy Rich Asians hit a box office milestone when it became one of only a few movies (like Avengers: Infinity Wa_r) to three-peat at the box office in 2018. The other movies that have been able to win three weekends in a row have been blockbusters this year, but _Crazy Rich Asians came out at a relatively quiet time at the box office, which helps to explain how it held on to that crown for three weekends, despite not have the same sort of box office cume as the aforementioned Marvel movie.

Rom-coms in general have declined in number at the box office in recent years, as female-geared movies have moved more toward raunch comedies and other genre films. While rom-coms still have remained strong on channels like Hallmark and Lifetime, it was only recently that rom-coms started gaining a higher profile again thanks to flicks like Crazy Rich Asians and streaming movies including For All The Boys I've Loved Before and Set It Up. At one point, Netflix even bid to bring Crazy Rich Asians to the streaming service, which would have superseded a theatrical release. Thankfully, those involved decided the theater was the best route for the flick, even though it was uncertain if audiences would respond to the film at that point.

Looking back, the theater gamble paid off. The release is helping to revitalize the genre and the studio has already signed on for sequel China Rich Girlfriend, although when that flick will film and when director Jon M. Chu and the rest of the cast will be available is still up in the air. CinemaBlend is on the case and we will let you know as soon as more details about the upcoming sequel can be confirmed.
