15 Actors Who Have Been Rumored To Take Over For Daniel Craig As James Bond

15 Actors Who Have Been Rumored To Take Over For Daniel Craig As James Bond

Bond... James Bond. It's a sought after role that many will chase, but few get to call their own. With Daniel Craig sending his tuxedo to the cleaners for good after Bond 25, it's, obviously, time to find a new super spy to protect the world in the name of the British crown. There's no shortage of names for the position, and thanks to some recent betting activity, there's a good list of folks that seem to be front runners and long shots. Though there are some surprises that don't have any money riding on them just yet.

Richard MaddenMadden is the apparent favorite in the betting world right now, and why wouldn't he be? Folks mostly remember him as the ill-fated King of the North, Robb Stark, from Game of Thrones, or his turn as Prince Charming in Kenneth Brannagh's live-action Cinderella. So, he can fight, as well as handle himself at a party.

Though, most recently, his name has been flying around as part of a hit British action/drama, Bodyguard, where he plays a law enforcement agent sworn to protect the Home Secretary. With a background in action, and a current gig that more than likely invokes Bond-ian comparisons on a regular basis, this could be a really good fit.

Sam HeughanSometimes, all you need to do is put on a tuxedo, and people will start saying you're the next James Bond. And that's exactly what happened to Sam Heughan, after he played a facsimile of 007 in this year's comedy, The Spy Who Dumped Me.

Best known for his role as Outlander's dreamy Jamie Fraser, he was even asked about playing the role at this year's New York Comic Con panel. Naturally, nothing definitive was said, but you could see in his face that Heughan has definitely thought about the possibility.

Idris ElbaPerhaps one of the most famous names attached to the next potential James Bond has been Idris Elba. A fixture of British television, thanks to the BBC's Luther, as well as an actor who's been in films far and wide, his is a name that's still hotly debated as next in line for a franchise martini.

While there haven't been any talks between Elba and Sony, with the actor even pegging himself as too old for the role, there's always been a fan contingent in his corner. If the right offer came along, we wouldn't blame him for never saying never again.

Tom HiddlestonTom Hiddleston's courtship with the role of James Bond was a sort of twofer. Not only did his lead role in The Night Manager land him notice as a possible replacement for Daniel Craig, it also gave series director Suzanne Bier some attention as a possible helmer for the franchise.

His participation may be dependent on whatever sort of Marvel contract Hiddleston has left. But, even if he was free and clear, he might be too typecast as the baddie (courtesy of his long-running stint as Loki in the MCU) to get that far in the running.

Tom HardyIt wouldn't be a bad thing if Tom Hardy found himself cast as the next 007. The man has a wide breadth of credits and experience that would suit him well, should he ever want to pursue the role of James Bond. However, Hardy's tastes in his roles do run rather eclectic, and the success of Venom more than likely ties him up for the next couple of years.

So, even if he could play Bond, there's no guarantee that he'd even want to. Though should he need a reference, former 007 Pierce Brosnan has backed him in the recent past.

Henry CavillOf course Henry Cavill's name would come up as a candidate for James Bond. This is exactly what happened when Pierce Brosnan was shown the door, and Cavill was apparently really close to getting the iconic role in Casino Royale, strong off of his work in Showtime's The Tudors.

While Daniel Craig won out that round, Henry Cavill has still expressed interest in playing the role. So, maybe his recent roles in both The Man From U.N.C.L.E and Mission: Impossible - Fallout were more than just a fun distraction from the imploding mess that is the DC Extended Universe.

Dan StevensWhile not as concretely mentioned as others on this list, Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey and Legion fame has had his name thrown into the ring as well. Though he's admittedly one of the more oddball picks, as he's not on the official betting odds list.

Stevens could be a good last minute contender for James Bond. The only problem is, the buzz surrounding him possibly getting the role would have to grow a bit more for serious contention, much like the rest of the contenders we're about to consider.

Aidan TurnerYou wouldn't think playing a love sick dwarf would be a big credit towards someone wanting to slip into the role of James Bond. Apparently, the competition to be the most lethal British spy opens itself up to some interesting competitors in that way -- just ask Aidan Turner.

His most high visibility role in the movie world was of Kili in The Hobbit trilogy, the dwarf who longed after Evangeline Lily's Tauriel. TV-wise, though, it's easier to see why he'd be in the running, as he's well known as the strong-willed romantic lead of the Poldark series.

Jack HustonThrough his role on Boardwalk Empire, Jack Huston built up quite a bit of capital as the strong but mostly silent war veteran turned enforcer Richard Darrow. It was enough to land him the lead in the defunct reboot to The Crow, and apparently, it's enough to land him in the back half of the field to become Bond.

Huston has not only enough experience with drama of all stripes, he's also classically handsome in the way that Bond fans are accustomed to. Throw in his relatively unknown, but exceptionally strong resume, and he's a prime pick.

Orlando BloomEven in his prime years in the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Orlando Bloom has always been a name tangentially mentioned in connection to James Bond. His intense fan base, and action chops, put him there without question.

In recent years, Bloom hasn't been as active in his film career, which may be why he's further back in the pack. That being said, there's obviously something about him that keeps fans hoping he'll get the call to save us all.

Robert PattinsonWhile Robert Pattinson is a name that may send some running for the hills, due to his Twilight affiliation, let's not forget the amazing work he's done since his time as a love struck vampire. Films like The Rover and Good Time have kept the man in the game, rehabbing his career something fierce in a very short time.

While his tastes in roles have run a bit more experimental in recent times, the hiring of director Cary Joji Fukunaga for Bond 25 might be the sort of sign that he's just the person to bring Bond into a new era. He's a lower tier candidate for now, but we'll see how that changes after this next film releases.

Benedict CumberbatchSome might feel that Benedict Cumberbatch is an odd choice, while others could see him as a natural fit. It's a bit of a toss up, to be sure, but what's also certain is the role of James Bond would truly be interesting in his hands.

Unfortunately, Cumberbatch has already made a name for himself as the BBC's Sherlock, as well as Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange. So, between those two franchises, their similar archetypes of brash genius, his scheduling, and public opinion, the role of Bond may not end up being in his favor.

Christian BalePondering Christian Bale as James Bond is something that has been tempting to fans for over a decade at this point. Rumored to have been offered the role during the Casino Royale scrum that Henry Cavill saw himself a part of, Bale himself dispelled those rumors a couple of years ago.

But, even after playing Batman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, the opportunity is still one that more than a couple of folks would like to see. However, his recent niche as a prestige player is probably what has him on the lower end of Sky Bet's betting pool (which we saw via The Sun.)

Jude LawJude Law has never had strong odds in the way of playing James Bond, which has always been a shame. Another candidate of range and distinction, Law has had experience in pretty much all corners of filmdom, most recently becoming the young Dumbledore for the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

While he's on the older side of the candidates mentioned, Jude Law does have something that fellow whisper candidate Sam Heughan has: he's played a parody of Bond. You can thank Paul Feig's Spy for both Law getting to send up 007 in proper fashion, and his possible hiring as Bond himself, should things play his way.

Liam NeesonBuckle up folks, because this isn't the first time Liam Neeson has been tipped as playing James Bond. That distinction goes to a project from back in the late '90s entitled Warhead 2000, which would have seen Neeson playing the super spy in a non-canon remake of Thunderball.

While that was at least 20 years ago, that hasn't stopped Neeson from still finding himself in the betting pool for Bond 26. Though he's one of, if not the, oldest candidates out there, you have to admit the man would be a hell of an ass kicker in her majesty's secret service.

Star Wars: Revenge Of The Siths Order 66 Sequence Could Have Been More Gruesome

Star Wars: Revenge Of The Siths Order 66 Sequence Could Have Been More Gruesome

From the minute The Phantom Menace started, we knew that the Star Wars prequel trilogy would eventually show us how the Galactic Empire rose to power. That time finally came in Revenge of the Sith, as after Mace Windu failed to kill Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker willingly became the chancellor's Sith apprentice, Palptaine, a.k.a. Darth Sidious, ordered the execution of Order 66. Across a galaxy far, far away, Jedi were eliminated by clone troopers, and Anakin oversaw the killing of younglings at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. It was a depressing moment in the Star Wars saga, but according to Palpatine's actor, Ian McDiarmid, the sequence could have been darker. As McDiarmid put it:

I think it was a little more gruesome than you ended up seeing, you know. A lot of young potential Jedi ended up on the cutting room floor.

Ian McDiarmid didn't provide any specifics regarding how Revenge of the Sith's Order 66 sequence was originally conceived during his appearance at the FanX convention in Salt Lake City this past weekend (via Comicbook.com), but the actor did note that it was "probably a good idea" that aspect of the movie was toned down. Revenge of the Sith was already breaking ground by being the first PG-13-rated Star Wars movie (which has continued with the Disney era Star Wars movies), but had Order 66 been fully realized, that might have resulted in the movie coming close to or even scoring an R rating, which is not a good thing when you're trying to get viewers young viewers into seats. So yeah, not including more shots of young Padawans being gunned or sliced down was probably for the best.

Although a scattering of Jedi managed to survive Order 66, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda among them, the newly-titled Emperor Palpatine was nonetheless successful in not just destroying the Jedi Order, but also painting the knights as traitors to the public. Most of the Order 66 sequence in Revenge of the Sith showed the clone troopers eliminating their former commanders, and all we saw of Anakin... sorry, Darth Vader's part in the devastation was him igniting his lightsaber in the High Council Chamber where numerous younglings were hiding and a hologram recording showing him dueling Cin Drallig and his apprentices. While each Star Wars movie has its dark moments, Revenge of the Sith is arguably the darkest chapter in the saga, and Order 66 played a large part with that... although seeing a man lose nearly all his limbs and be horribly burned on a lava planet brought it home.

The Star Wars saga will continue when Star Wars: Episode IX is released on December 20, 2019. As for what else the space opera franchise has in development, check out our handy guide.

How Sean Gunn Feels About Bradley Cooper Getting The Attention For Playing Rocket In Guardians

How Sean Gunn Feels About Bradley Cooper Getting The Attention For Playing Rocket In Guardians

Bradley Cooper is the actor most associated with Guardians of the Galaxy's Rocket, by virtue of the fact that he provides the character's voice. However, it's another actor who actually does a lot of the work to bring Rocket to life. Sean Gunn, the brother of Guardians director James Gunn, and the man who plays the role of Kraglin, plays Rocket on the set in a green screen body suit while in a permanent crouch. Considering what Gunn puts his body through, he'd be forgiven for being a little put out that he doesn't get a lot of the credit, but the actor says he doesn't do it for the credit. According to Sean Gunn...

It is strange to spend so many hours as a character and then see it and have it be neither my voice nor my face. But I never did the job because I thought it would get me a lot of attention. I did the job because I wanted the movie to be as good as it could possibly be.

Sean Gunn may not mind that he doesn't get the recognition, but the fact is that he should get a lot of it. Voice acting is a much harder job than many people give it credit for, so Bradley Cooper shouldn't be overlooked, but the two are, at the very least, equal partners in bringing Rocket to life on screen. Sean Gunn doesn't simply give Rocket a place for the CGI effects people to focus, but he also aides the other actors on the set by giving them somebody to actually act with, rather than having to emote toward empty air or a tennis ball on a stick.

Sean Gunn had portrayed Rocket in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies but Entertainment Weekly reports that he did not assume he would have the same role in Avengers: Infinity War, as it was being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo rather than his own brother. The Russos apparently didn't hesitate to put Gunn out there with the other actors, which likely helped everybody who had to interact with Rocket on screen.

We'll see Rocket along with the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy when they unite with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Avengers: Infinity War when it hits theaters in just a few weeks. While you watch it, try to remember that behind that CGI "not a raccoon" there's a guy in green spandex doing his best to make the character come to life. He may not do it for the credit, but he still deserves it.

But the path Gunn took to get to such a rarefied position is as unlikely as a foulmouthed, spacefaring raccoon named Rocket winning the hearts of a grateful nation. Prior to his career supernova that was Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, Gunn had only directed two features, 2006's Slither and 2011's Super.

Sean Gunn, who played Rocket Racoon on set as well as the role of Kraglin in the first two "Guardians" films, also chimed in on why it took so long for a female-fronted Marvel film to be made.
James Gunn: Marvel's Dark And Twisted Guardian

Sean Gunn: Well, I don't really feel like I played the character -- I did, to some degree, but I was a placeholder for the final product, which is an amalgamation of Bradley [Cooper] and the special effects team. But the first challenge was physical which was getting my eyes -- I'm 6 feet tall, Rocket's 22 inches tall, so trying to get my eyes

Did Black Panther Reveal An Important Development For A Key Marvel Hero?

Did Black Panther Reveal An Important Development For A Key Marvel Hero?

Warning: Black Panther SPOILERS ahead! Read at your own risk!

There's a lot to digest now that Black Panther has debuted in theaters. Between the film's historic box office performance and its inclusion of one of Marvel's best villains yet in the form of Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger, there's no shortage of great potential for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having said that, one of the most exciting elements of Black Panther's story comes during the post-credits scene, in which Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) finally wakes up from cryosleep. He's obviously going to play a significant role in Avengers: Infinity War, but the scene also makes us think that he could go on to become the obscure Marvel hero White Wolf at some point as well.

For the sake of context, let's dive into what specifically happens in the Black Panther post-credits scene, and what it could mean. In the short clip, a group of Wakandan children run out of a hut and declare that the "White Wolf" has awakened. From here, Bucky emerges and shares a brief exchange with Shuri (Letitia Wright) to set up their alliance going forward. The conversation between the two main Marvel characters clearly establishes big things for Infinity War, but the fact that the kids refer to Bucky as "White Wolf" seems like a thinly-veiled reference to the Marvel character of the same name.

As Marvel purists will likely be able to tell you, there's actually a character in Black Panther's lore named White Wolf. In the comics, White Wolf is a Caucasian man named Hunter who grew up in Wakanda after his parents were killed in a plane crash. Adopted by King T'Chaka, he eventually goes on to become a master hand-to-hand combatant, as well as a skilled marksman. However, easily his most noteworthy trait is his vibranium suit, which is nearly identical to the outfit worn by T'Challa, except it's white instead of black.

Within the current pantheon of Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes, Bucky definitely stands out as the best option to take on the role of White Wolf. He's a badass soldier with a penchant for martial arts and large firearms, and his tenure as The Winter Soldier means that he has clearly picked up all of the necessary traits that we generally associate with someone like Hunter. Moreover, while Bucky and T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) seem to have mended their relationship after the events of Captain America: Civil War, their initial hatred of one another could easily translate to a loose adaptation of the antagonistic relationship between White Wolf and Black Panther. Bucky wouldn't be a straightforward adaptation of White Wolf, but he meets many of the necessary qualifications to make it possible within the framework established by the MCU.

Moreover, allowing Bucky to take on the mantle of White Wolf would actually clear up some space elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for another passing of the torch. Many fans have wondered which friend of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) would inherit the mantle of Captain America when Rogers inevitably retires from active duty (or dies). If Bucky dons the White Wolf suit, then the stars, stripes, and vibranium shield would be waiting for none other than Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon. Many fans already expect a massive changing of the guard when Phase 3 comes to an end, so bringing White Wolf into the fold could easily allow the folks at Marvel to neatly hand off some of their best mantles while also honoring the other heroes who stick around.

At this point, it's anyone's guess as to whether or not Bucky Barnes will take on the mantle of White Wolf in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. So for now, we will just have to watch what the newly-thawed Winter Soldier does with himself when the Russo Brothers' Avengers: Infinity War premieres in theaters later this year on May 4!
