John Cena Is Nude In Blockers, Here's What We Know

Blockers, the new raunch comedy about a group of parents trying to prevent their teens from losing their respective virginities, hits theaters this coming weekend. If you've seen the trailer for the flick, you've seen the eggplant emoji jokes, the car chases and one memorable scene involving butt chugging. However, there's one facet of the movie the trailer doesn't make clear. Former pro wrestler and current Blockers movie star John Cena takes it off in the movie, and he and his co-stars have been pretty open about what happens.

His co-star Leslie Mann recently opened up about one scene in question during an appearance on Today this week, admitting that John Cena does drop trou in the upcoming flick, saying about the scene,

He does. He likes being naked. And he looks great. And so why not?

We're about to get into some more specific spoilers, here, so if you want to go into the comedy with no knowledge, head out now. The scene in question Leslie Mann was discussing was a butt-chugging scene during the movie, a scene that has played a big part in the trailers for Blockers. In order to gain access to a high school party, the trailer shows that John Cena and co. have to pretend they are cool and willing to drink with teens, after which Cena's character pulls down his pants and totally butt chugs. It's a scene that has already stood out in the ads and is likely to continue to stand out when the movie hits screens.

Director Kay Cannon has called John Cena's nude work in Blockers "naked Marco Polo," telling MTV,

At the beginning of shooting, I was very conservative with him, being like, 'Are you OK doing the...' you know, I was very delicate. At the end, I was just like, 'OK, I need you naked.' And he actually feels more comfortable naked then clothed.

Cena also previously has talked about his nude work in Blockers, bringing up that he does at least have a shirt on during the butt-chugging scene, so that one was not full nudity. He told Ellen a while back that after Trainwreck's nude scene he and Nikki Bella now go over the options before he signs on the dotted line.

For the Trainwreck one I did not. I was just like, 'Eh, it'll be fine.' I was wrong. So, that was a problem, and that ended up being a tough discussion and now we review all the material that is thrown in my direction and we come to the conclusion that it will be OK.

The actor has also mentioned that fans should stick around until the end of the movie for more nude surprises, noting,

There's kind of a little scene at the end--stay for the end after the end--that involves me in my birthday suit. And it took a while to film. So, I was just in my birthday suit for a long time. And the in-between stuff of 'Yeah, we got to clean up and reset,' and I'm just kind-of kicking it. It made everyone... it's uncomfortable to be in your birthday suit. So, I'm like, 'You know what; I'm just going to make everyone feel like me.' And, boy did they ever.

The additional nude scene in question, as John Cena mentioned also mentioned to MTV, took six hours to shoot. So, in conclusion, there's plenty of John Cena in Blockers and if all of that seems like your type of thing, you can check out the movie when it hits theaters on April 6. We have talked and written about the fact that horror movies are hot in 2018, but few horror flicks to that have debuted this year have honored the classic slasher genre quite like The Strangers: Prey at Night. The film served as a total love letter to classic slasher cinema like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Black Christmas, and that grounded element of the story is what made the film so downright terrifying to star Christina Hendricks. In fact, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Hendricks addressed the down-to-earth and random nature of the horror and explained:

To me it was, it was how completely random it was that someone could just show up and kill you for absolutely no reason that it had nothing to do with the devil or God or. So, they're monsters or aliens. It's literally just, it could happen tomorrow because people are crazy and because you could just have bad luck. So, to me that it's the most terrifying idea in the world.

That's kind of the entire point of The Strangers world, isn't it? Both movies begin with one of the titular slashers arriving on a doorstep to ask, "is Tamara home," and in both cases, the question leads to a full-blown assault that leaves seemingly innocent victims dead merely because they were home. Despite all of the creepy ghosts and goblins that the horror genre has become known for, this sense of realism stands out as the thing that makes The Strangers: Prey at Night so creepy to Christina Hendricks.

This is a stark contrast to other subgenres of horror, particularly with regards to the styles of horror movies that we have seen debut this year. Though The Strangers: Prey at Night is a gritty horror thriller set in an authentic world, 2018 has mostly been defined by movies about demons (Insidious: The Last Key), curses (Truth or Dare), aliens (A Quiet Place), and demonic cults (Hereditary). Even the other notable tentpole slasher film set to debut later this year (David Gordon Green's Halloween), toys with elements of the supernatural in how immortal Michael Myers seems. Amid all of these otherworldly horror romps, The Strangers: Prey at Night stands out as one of the most plausible.

Venom Didn't Use Motion Capture After All, According To Tom Hardy

Back before we had seen anything from Sony's upcoming Venom movie, we learned, or at least thought we learned, that the symbiote anti-hero would be brought to life onscreen through the use of CGI with actor Tom Hardy performing motion capture. This made sense, as no amount of makeup or costuming could do the character justice, and motion/performance capture is increasingly used for bringing these kinds of otherworldly characters to life in blockbuster movies. However, it now turns out that although Venom is still being brought to life through CGI, Tom Hardy did not do any motion capture for the role, as he explained:

It wasn't motion-capture, because the eyeballs on the creature, on Venom, and the mouth, they don't match with my eyeballs and mouth. So the mo-cap treatment went out of the window pretty quickly... Facially, your eyes and teeth and tongue are not going to match with this. And you need a 7ft tall basketball player in a Lycra suit for the physical shots.

It sounds like practical and logistical considerations ruled out the use of motion capture more than anything else. Unlike a character like Thanos, Venom's facial features are far from human, and as Tom Hardy told Total Film (via ScreenRant), because his eyes and mouth wouldn't match up with the symbiote's, that meant that performance capture wouldn't work. On the motion capture front, to convey Venom's movements, Tom Hardy doesn't have the height or the build, so that too was eschewed. The fact that Tom Hardy didn't perform motion capture for Venom would seem to indicate that the digital animators created all of the character's movements and expressions. That is unless they really did recruit a really tall person for the movements.

This is interesting because motion and performance capture are common in blockbusters, especially superhero movies. In Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year, we saw Josh Brolin's Thanos, for whom he performed motion and performance capture. Obviously Josh Brolin doesn't have Thanos' height, but they still chose to do motion capture. And as far as not matching up to the character, Benedict Cumberbatch did motion capture for Smaug in The Hobbit, so it makes you wonder about what the differences are and the technical aspects that inform these decisions.

I guess it comes down to a question of how much motion and performance capture are really translating the actor's performance when the actor and the character are so different. If so much has to be filled in and changed that the actor's performance is barely there anymore, perhaps it makes sense to just not bother altogether. Part of what is exciting though about a Tom Hardy Venom is the actor's physicality that he brings to the role. So hopefully that still comes through in the film. If nothing else, Tom Hardy will be providing the voice for the character.

Fortunately we don't have to wait too much longer to see how this second attempt at a big screen Venom turns out. Venom, which will probably by PG-13, not rated R, is on track for a big opening when it premieres in theaters on October 5.
