The 'Crowd Pleaser' Character Toy Story 4 Cut From Its Final Version

Pixar movies undergo a lot of changes over the course of their development. In the case of Toy Story 4, nearly the entire movie underwent significant story changes. While these sorts of changes are always made in an attempt to make the overall movie better, sometimes story beats and even entire characters that the movie makers love end up getting cut out as a result. Toy Story 4 was no exception.

Last month, when I had a chance to talk to Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley and producers Jonas Rivera and Mark Nielsen, I asked them if they had any particular elements of Toy Story 4 that didn't make the final version of the film that they missed. All three were in total agreement, that one character they all wish they could have kept was a dancing Santa Claus. According to Cooley...

Dancing Santa was pretty great, he was a character [who] didnt make it. He was in the antique store and was kind of able, in a very unique way, he was kind of an expert on where to go. and the way things were at the [antiques] mall.

If you've seen the trailers for Toy Story 4 then you'll have seen the antiques store location. It's a major new setting for the film where a lot of the action takes place. We also meet a lot of new characters there, like Christina Hendricks' Gabby Gabby and Keanu Reeves' Duke Caboom.

However, one character that we unfortunately won't be meeting is a talking, dancing, Santa Claus character. The idea was clearly a favorite among many at Pixar. In addition to Josh Cooley and the producers, Toy Story production designer Bob Pauley and global technology supervisor Bill Reeves, who have been part of the franchise since the beginning, also mentioned to me that the Santa was a favorite lost character of theirs as well.

Josh Cooley explained what the scene was originally going to look like...

Hes kinda like an informant in a seedy alley. [Bo and Woody] were talking about, Man, its dark in this antiques store. Its pretty intense, everybody seems so desperate. And theyd hear, Tis the season for desperation and theyd turn around and theres one of these Santas there. Hes got a little candle thats up lighting on him. And Woodys like, Look Santa, wed need some help and all of the sudden hed start dancing. Jingle Bell Rock is playing. Ah, you set off my motion detector. And then hed go back into, Anyway, like I was saying... and theres still Jungle Bell Rock playing [in the background]. It was a crowd pleaser for sure.

It's clear that the reason everybody liked the Santa was because the jokes were funny, but ultimately, Pixar always wants to focus on the story that is being told, and if a gag gets in the way of that, the gag has to go, no matter how funny it is. Bob Pauly explained to me that this was the problem with the dancing Santa:

It got cut, which is the right thing, because that was a moment when they had it where it was kind of an emotional moment in the movie, where it's about Bo and Woody. Trust [me], it needed to go, it didn't support that.

The good news is that it sounds like enough of the dancing Santa survives that we'll get to see him as part of the deleted scenes on the eventual Toy Story 4 Blu-ray. Until then, we can see the final version of Toy Story 4 on June 21. Tickets for the summer sequel are on sale as we speak, so make sure that you grab your seats to opening weekend, so you'll see the latest adventure with Buzz, Woody and the gang.

How Much The Predator Made On Opening Night

It's been eight years since the last film in the long-running Predator franchise, but audiences finally return to the hunt this weekend with the release of The Predator. Shane Black's relaunch is the biggest new release this weekend and it has been tracking to have the best opening weekend in the franchise. The Predator got a head start on its box office run last night, making $2.5 million in Thursday night preview screenings.

The Predator now has $2.5 million in the bank ahead of what is forecasted to be a $25-$30 million weekend, according to Deadline. That should give The Predator a decent shot at snagging first place at the box office. For comparison, the similarly R-rated Alien: Covenant posted $4.2 million from preview screenings ahead of a $36 million weekend. The best opening for a film with the Predator in it was Alien Vs. Predator, which made $38.2 million when it debuted in 2004, although it is up for debate whether that really counts as a Predator film. The best debut for a proper Predator film was Predators, which made $24.7 million opening weekend, a number The Predator is tracking to beat.

In a contest of killing prowess, the Predator has no equal, but at the box office, The Predator will be facing some stiff competition for the #1 spot in the form of The Nun. The Conjuring Universe film overcame bad reviews to set a record for that franchise last weekend, and it is still looking strong this weekend. The Nun is tracking to make around $25 million in the next few days, but The Predator is projected to edge it out at the box office.

This weekend has no shortage of R-rated fare with White Boy Rick and A Simple Favor also debuting. White Boy Rick, the Matthew McConaughey film based on a true story, made $575K in preview screenings last night and is tracking at around $8-$10 million for the weekend. A Simple Favor boasts the best reviews of this weekend's new releases and made $900K in previews on its way to a weekend that should fall somewhere in the mid-teens.

Thursday night's $2.5 million isn't a bad start for The Predator, and if it lives up to the tracking, it will be well on its way to recouping its $88 million budget. That The Predator is looking to perform this well speaks to the nostalgia for the franchise and audience desire for this kind of movie. There are a lot of internal and external forces that you might think would make matters more difficult for The Predator's box office prospects but they do not appear to be doing so. The sex offender controversy that popped up last week has become a story around the film, and even ignoring that unfortunate situation, The Predator is not doing particularly well critically, sitting at 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. That said, some people really dug it. There is also the fact the East Coast is dealing with Hurricane Florence, but it looks like The Predator doesn't mind a little rain.

Fifty Shades Freed Led Jamie Dornan To Practically Beg For His Next Role

Jamie Dornan has taken his clothes off in three Fifty Shades trilogy movies, not to mention signed on for plenty of other adult roles. Thus, when the opportunity arose for him to do voice work in a children's movie, Dornan was all in. He recently revealed on The Graham Norton Show he practically pleaded for the gig, noting,

I've played a lot of creepy characters so my kids can't watch anything I'd done so I basically begged Universal to give me a part. I loved it and it was an amazing experience, but doing voice over made me very uncomfortable.

Jamie Dornan has a bunch of movies coming up, including A Private War, Robin Hood, My Dinner With Herve, and the upcoming animated flick Trolls World Tour. Dornan actually has kids, so doing an animated movie that his kids could attend and enjoy watching became a priority to the actor as he was wrapping Fifty Shades Freed up.

Although he was super game to do voice work in Trolls World Tour, Jamie Dornan did share with Graham Norton that voice work is not the easiest task. He also said it made him "very uncomfortable," which is a little surprising since you'd think the "wee-bag" and various other things related to the nude scenes he shot for Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed may have taken the cake there.

Likely, the nudity is a different kind of uncomfortable than doing voice work, however. (Although if you ask co-star Dakota Johnson, the nude scenes were more "tedious" than anything.)

Jamie Dornan has two daughters with his wife Amelia Warner, whom he married in 2013. The couple recently announced a third kid is on the way as well. His youngest right now is about two and a half and his older daughter will celebrate her fifth birthday this November, which means she is certainly old enough to watch and engage with an animated movie like Trolls World Tour.

Trolls World Tour won't be out for some time, however. The Universal Pictures movie was originally expected to be released in April of 2020, although it has shuffled its dates a tad so that Fast & Furious 9 can take the April slot. The flick is now expected to be released on April 17, 2020.

Along with Jamie Dornan, Trolls World Tour is expected to star James Cordon, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Sam Rickwell, Chance the Rapper, Kelly Clarkson and many more. Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick will also headline the movie, which is a sequel to the 2016 film Trolls.
