The Nun Trailer: The Conjuring Spinoff Looks Truly Creepy

The horror genre is in a bit of a renaissance right now, with new and exciting works being released to critical acclaim and box office success. While Blumhouse has its hands full bringing the Halloween franchise back, Warner Bros. has made an entire cinematic universe out of The Conjuring franchise. The monsters from the main films are being given spinoffs, with the next installment coming with The Nun. The horrifying villain first popped up in The Conjuring 2, and the upcoming movie will see Taissa Farmiga's Sister Irene investing the creature's origins. A first trailer just dropped, and it's as horrifying as you'd hope.

I'm so ready to get back into James Wan's twisted world, and the terrifying creatures that inhabit it. The Nun looks like a great addition to The Conjuring Universe, with the villain herself being one of the scariest creations to come out of it.

The trailer opens with The Nun as we first saw her in Conjuring 2: a painting. An already ghastly image in the light, things suddenly go dark, and you see The Nun's glowing eyes. It's no wonder that she was given her own standalone movie. The character proper hasn't even been shown, and the opening moments of the trailer are enough to send chills down horror fans' spines.

Much like The Conjuring franchise proper, it seems like The Nun is having its protagonist tell the terrifying story backward, meaning Sister Irene will likely survive the film's main narrative. The Conjuring's Vera Farmiga (Taissa's real life sister) used a similar framing device through the first two films, recounting some of Ed and Lorraine's scariest cases. Sister Irene apparently has some sort of sensitivity to the spirit world, and is sent to Romania after having visions of The Nun.

It looks like The Nun will combine both supernatural horror with mystery, as Sister Irene investigates the mysterious suicide of a nun. The Conjuring franchise often combines literal demons with real life struggles, so it should be fun to see how it all unravels. One thing is clear: James Wan's signature style will be there, complete with plenty of jump scares and startling imagery.

While James Wan isn't directing The Nun, it seems he did have a fair amount of influence over the upcoming spinoff. He's been credited as helping to craft the story, as well as being a producer. The Nun was directed by relative newcomer Corin Hardy, who made his debut directing The Hallow. Fans of horror are no doubt excited to see Taissa Farmiga playing the film's lead, after her work on Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story and The Final Girls.

The Nun will arrive in theaters on September 7, 2018 to start the Halloween season. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Jason Bateman And John Cena Are Teaming Up For A Netflix Movie That Already Sounds Awesome

Jason Bateman And John Cena Are Teaming Up For A Netflix Movie That Already Sounds Awesome

Netflix is continuing its new streak of high quality original films with A-list talent. The streaming service wants to make a seriously large amount of films before year-end and its latest project has acquired the attention of John Cena. Netflix will pair John Cena with Jason Bateman for an action comedy that already sounds like it will be a blast. The new film will feature Cena trapped in a movie studio where the sets come to life.

A WWE superstar turned actor, John Cena has been trying his hand at more and more comedies. And he's really funny in them! Cena's last comedy was Blockers, a movie about three parents who try to stop their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night. While that sounds terrible on paper, it's actually a very sweet and mindful comedy, and Cena does some great comedy. He also butt-chugs beer.

Let's hope that John Cena's comedy hot streak continues with Netflix. While the project is untitled, it will follow a family that gets stuck in an old abandoned movie studio where the sets come to life, trapping the family in various movies. Cena will star while Jason Bateman will direct. According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources say Bateman will also appear in the film.

The screenplay was written by Mark Perez, who also wrote Jason Bateman's sleeper hit Game Night. That was another surprisingly good comedy of 2018, and I'm excited to see how this new untitled project develops. Perez is also writing a live-action Carmen Sandiego movie for Netflix that will star Gina Rodriguez.

Jason Bateman is no stranger to Netflix. In addition to the streaming giant serving as the home to new episodes of Arrested Development, Netflix also airs Bateman's crime drama Ozark. In addition to starring, Bateman also directs several episodes of the show. The new action comedy will be Bateman's second feature film. His directorial debut was the 2013 comedy Bad Words.

John Cena's last movie was Bumblebee, which didn't quite make that large of a splash because of Aquaman. Still, the movie got positive reviews and was seen as a major step up for the Transformers franchise. It also made enough money oversees to justify a sequel, now reportedly in development. He'll next appear in the action movie Project X-Traction, which co-stars Jackie Chan. Cena is also gearing up for a family comedy called Playing with Fire.

This new project sounds like it's assembled the right three guys to bring it to life. It seems like its cut from the same cloth as Game Night, where an outrageous experience evolves from a standard situation...not that getting locked in a movie studio is standard.

There's no release date for this project just yet, but stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated as soon as new information becomes available. In the meantime, keep track of all those Netflix releases with our handy guide.

Shazam! Director Warns Fans About Rumors

Shazam! Director Warns Fans About Rumors

When it comes to the big blockbuster films, fans will always be looking for the latest bit of news or gossip. This quest often leads to rumors that circulate about those movies, and when actual news is lacking, rumors can become the main things people talk about. A recent rumor regarding Shazam! got a lot of fans excited, and after being forced to shoot it down, director David F. Sandberg asked all fans to do their best to disregard all rumors, as they will so often disappoint. According to Sandberg...

I hate for people to be disappointed but I can't respond to every rumor. Safest bet is to not believe anything that hasn't been officially announced.

The specific rumor, in this case, was in regards to a new trailer for Shazam! that some believed would apparently be hitting the internet yesterday. David F. Sandberg responded on Twitter that this was not the case, but not fast enough to frustrate some fans who had become excited for the potential of new footage in the interim.

The rumor mill is always a dangerous place. The problem, of course, is that sometimes, not infrequently, the rumors that come out turn out to be entirely, or partially, true. This means that the next time a rumor comes out it can be given more weight than it truly deserves. People will believe it simply because it's a rumor. However, rumors are just as frequently complete B.S, and since it's rarely possible to know where any given rumor comes from, it's difficult to know which is which.

Since it's impossible to know which rumors could be true and which are crap, David F. Sandberg's recommendation is to just disbelieve everything until it's confirmed by an official source. That certainly has the benefit of making sure you don't believe the false rumors, and while you might end up not believing something that turns out to be true, that's far from a big deal. You don't really gain much by believing anything early if it ends up getting confirmed before release anyway, and if you make it all the way to the movie, you get to enjoy something you didn't know was going to happen, while everybody else saw it coming and had it spoiled.

As far as this particular rumor. It might have been spawned by the new Shazam! footage that aired on television over the weekend. Somebody with knowledge of that before it happened might have morphed it into a new trailer rumor over time. Alternatively, it's possible we could be getting a new trailer sometime soon. Studios frequently end up changing dates around for things like that, so it's possible there was a trailer release planned at one point that then got canceled.

There will probably be many more rumors about Shazam! between now and the film's release in April. Until then, we'll all have to decide how much we want to believe them.
