Why I Feel Pretty Was Never Rated-R, Despite Starring Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer starring in movies is a regular thing nowadays, but part of what makes her latest, I Feel Pretty, stand out is the fact that it's rated PG-13, not Rated R. Schumer is famous for raunchy material and plenty of bad words in her comedy, so it's surprising to see her take on something so family friendly. Apparently that sense of surprise was intentional, however, as I recently learned from an interview with directors Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn that Schumer was very interested in restraining herself and doing something new while on set. Said Silverstein,

We knew PG-13 from the outset, and she was excited about that type of movie. She was super excited about doing the more dramatic stuff, showing a sort of different side of her.

At the end of last week I had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn to discuss their work together on I Feel Pretty -- and it was during this conversation that I took the opportunity to ask about the rating. Apparently not only was the film was planned to be PG-13, but Amy Schumer actually took extra steps within herself to make sure she was doing something different than what we generally see from her.

Abby Kohn illustrated this perfectly when talking about working with Amy Schumer during production. Evidently there were times when she would say something really funny and off-color, but then would immediately self-correct, realizing that what she was doing was not really appropriate for the story being told in I Feel Pretty. Said Kohn,

The emotional honesty part of it [is very much her], it's apparent in the first 10 minutes of the movie. I think she was really excited about that. And we didn't have to... she obviously so funny, and she would do things that were so funny, and then she would immediately be like, 'Not this movie!' So she knew. She obviously is a genius, and she can be really funny, but also know in that moment like, 'That was really funny. We all really laughed. The crew really laughed. We get it! It's not for this movie.'

In I Feel Pretty, which is based on an original screenplay by Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, Amy Schumer plays a woman who sees her low self-esteem go out the window following a head injury. While she used to judge herself and feel the world judging her, she suddenly believes herself to be the most gorgeous woman on the planet, and finds her confidence takes her to places in her life unimaginable before.

The film, which co-stars Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski, Busy Phillips, Aidy Bryant and Rory Scovel, arrives in theaters this Friday -- and be sure to stay tuned for more from my interview with I Feel Pretty directors Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn.

Why Star Trek 4 Needs To Happen, According To John Cho

Why Star Trek 4 Needs To Happen, According To John Cho

While the TV side of the Star Trek franchise is flowing along with Star Trek: Discovery and the upcoming Picard series, the movies side has been in stasis since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016. There's no word yet on when, or even if, Star Trek 4, a.k.a. the fourth entry of the reboot film series, will be released, but John Cho, who plays Hikaru Sulu, is hoping he and his costars get to return for a fourth outing since there's a cloud over the third one due to the tragic passing of Anton Yelchin. In Cho's words:

I think its an important part of American popular culture that speaks to Americas best impulses and I think that there will always be a place for Star Trek films and I just hope to be in it and there isn't another totally different group of people! I'm bullish about it, and honestly, for personal reasons I suppose the last film has a cloud over it, losing Anton [Yelchin] after the last one and for me it would be important personally to make one more at least. I think it would alleviate that part of us a little bit to make at least one more.

Like John Cho, Anton Yelchin was part of the main cast for the first three Star Trek reboot movies, but sadly, a month before Star Trek Beyond came out, Yelchin died in a freak car accident, making Beyond one of his final appearances. Producer J.J. Abrams already said that Pavel Chekov will not be recast for Star Trek 4, but as Cho sees it, making another movie in the film series allows the opportunity to leave things off on a brighter note.

It's a nice sentiment, and while these Star Trek movies won't feel the same without Anton Yelchin reprising Anton Chekov, I can understand why John Cho wants the gang brought back together. However, in terms of Star Trek 4's current progress, Cho couldn't provide any updates to The Playlist, saying he doesn't know what "the ins and outs at the studio are." That said, he's still "optimistic" that a new Star Trek movie will eventually come out.

Although it was announced shortly before Star Trek Beyond's release that Star Trek 4 would see Chris Pine's James Kirk meeting his father, Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk (remember, he died at the beginning of 2009's Star Trek), for nearly two years after that, there were no major updates on the project. Then it was revealed this past April that Star Trek 4 was in development concurrently with Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek movie, and later in the month, director S.J. Clarkson was tapped to helm Star Trek 4.

You'd think that update meant we'd see Star Trek 4 sooner rather than later, but then in August, both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth walked away due to pay disputes with Paramount. The two men wanted to keep their existing pay deals intact, but the studio insisted they take pay cuts due to Star Trek Beyond not performing as well commercially as hoped. Now with 2018 almost over, it remains to be seen if Star Trek 4 will ever see the light of day, but at least John Cho remains hopeful it'll one day happen.

Rest assured, if there's any news regarding Star Trek 4's progress, we here at CinemaBlend will keep you updated on that front.

The Hate U Give Writer Audrey Wells Dies Just A Day Before Its Opening

The Hate U Give Writer Audrey Wells Dies Just A Day Before Its Opening

2017 young adult novel The Hate U Give personified the #MeToo movement by telling the story of a teenaged girl who experiences the death of her friend firsthand. Following the original story written by Angie Thomas, screenwriter Audrey Wells took on the task of translating it to screen in the new film starring Amandla Stenberg, from this summer's The Darkest Minds. Sadly, the talented writer will not see her latest work reach the masses, as Wells passed away just one day before The Hate U Give's release. The 58-year-old died on Thursday after a five-year battle with cancer.

Prior to adapting The Hate U Give to film, Audrey Wells penned other films including The Truth About Cats & Dogs, George of the Jungle, The Kid Shall We Dance and A Dog's Purpose. Wells also directed two films: 1999's Guinevere and 2003's Under the Tuscan Sun. Her biggest box office earnings stemmed from her collaborations with Disney on family films George of the Jungle in 1997 and The Kid in 2000. The screenwriter leaves behind her husband Brian and daughter Tatiana along with her contributions to the film industry.

Co-President of United Talent Agency David Kramer has since praised Audrey Wells for her strong, independent female characters that will "be a part of her legacy always" Additionally, The Hate U Give novelist Angie Thomas tweeted the following:

It was a joy to work with Audrey, and I'm forever grateful for what she gave us with The Hate U Give adaptation. She will truly be missed.

News of her death comes via CBS News, just before The Hate U Give's limited release on October 6th. The topical teen drama premiered at Toronto Film Festival last month to high praise from early critics. Entertainment Weekly's Leah Greenblatt detailed in her review that the film has a "a message that feels too fresh and important to dismiss --- not of hate but of hope, and faith that even if sharing these stories can't magically fix what's broken, telling them still matters." The important film will campaign for Oscar recognition for its discussion of racial violence in the United States. It follows a teenaged girl named Starr Carter who is thrust into the spotlight to tell her story and speak out after her childhood friend is shot in front of her by a police officer when he moved his hands to pull out a hairbrush.

The Hate U Give starring Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russel Hornsby, Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae and Common is now playing in select theaters and will expand nationwide on October 19.
